The Wednesday Poem

Fremantle Shipping News is pleased to bring you The Wednesday Poem.

In this feature we bring you poems by Freo and Freo-connected poets and those who may not call themselves poets but love writing poetry or having a go!

Today, we are pleased to bring you One With The Land by Aileen Hawkes.

One With the Land

The promise of light
Peeps through the spinifex
On the crest of the hill
The heart beat of the country
Is palpable
The pre dawn silence
Interrupted only
By the birds –
The wind chimes of the desert
The bare feet of early risers
Enveloped in the red dirt
Feel the vibration
Of the voices of the people
Who’ve been before
Those who left their presence
On the rocks
At the foot of the hill
Or in the caves
Where the life blood of country
Still seeps
Offering connection to those
Who hear their song
