In this feature we bring you poems by Freo and Freo-connected poets and those who may not call themselves poets but love writing poetry or having a go!

Today, we are pleased to bring you Kulin by Kevin Gillam.

Kulin

it’s Saturday, saloon. it’s coins
stacked on bar towel and pony’s of

beer. it’s race seven from Doomben
and the jangle of a pinny

and banter between the boys.
it’s the flywire slap. it’s talk of

rain. it’s Clarrie with three teeth
in beanie. it’s frayed carpet and

Chef’s Special on blackboard. it’s the
whirr of fan. it’s wheat yields and ‘your

round’ and ‘yeah, school’s closing’. it’s
salt and vinegared and stale. it’s

the head price for ewes and pressed tin
silence. its saloon, Saturday
