The Order of Things
In my mother’s linen cupboard,
towels and cotton sheets lined up
in lovely rainbow rows,
all line-dried and sun-smelling.
Folded into neat squares,
folded edges facing out.
There were rules for how things were.
A perception of order.
Walking to the clothesline,
the day sunny, thoughts disordered,
I miss her.
Bernadette Brady
* Bernadette Brady lives with a small dog in a small unit by the river in Maylands, where her habit is to sit and contemplate sunsets, and witness the enduring power of nature to heal and sooth the soul. Bernadette says she is always learning. Always. To write, to observe, to live differently, to practise gratitude. Her work has always involved working with people of all ages, as a nurse, a counsellor, manager, community development worker and more.
