Not the Spirit but the Liekut

FREO TODAY

Freo Today. 20 September 2025. Something a little different for our Shipees today. Another port pic! Ever since Spirit of Tasmania IV passed by Freo and headed to Tassie to get ready to perform her Bass Strait duties, in due course, we have maintained a lovely connection with our port friends in Devonport, from where Spirit IV will eventually operate. In the meantime the smaller existing Spirits I and II keep very active across the Strait, as does SeaRoad’s roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) freighter Liekut, pictured here. The MV Liekut is a modern cargo vessel built in 2020 and operated by SeaRoad, serving the Bass Strait route between Melbourne and Devonport. She replaced the SeaRoad Tamar in April 2021, significantly boosting SeaRoad’s freight capacity across Bass Strait. She sails between Webb Dock in Port Melbourne and East Devonport, typically on a daily schedule. Many thanks to Janice Buttery, one of our wonderful ‘eyes-and-ears’ in Devonport for this great pic of the Liekut tied up there just now! Btw, we are told ‘Liekut’, in a German dialect, means ‘to run in a straight line’!
