Freo Today. 4 May 2024. Well, Freo Yesterday, actually. This pic shows the mouth of the Swan River/Derbarl Yerrigan not so long before CY O’Connor set about blasting out the rocky bar across the river mouth to create a nice wide entrance for ships to enter a new Inner Harbour. Today is the day 127 years ago that the new Inner Harbour was officially opened and the old steamer Sultan steamed into port to the cheers of all the local dignitaries! Four and a half years ago we featured the story of the various proposals for outer harbours over the years after the establishment in 1829 of The Swan River Colony, until the Inner Harbour proposal was agreed on. And now we are back to outer harbour proposals once again!
