Fremantle’s three-bin system can be a bit of a puzzle, but here’s a clear breakdown to help sort it all out:
🟢 Green-lidded bin (FOGO – Food Organics & Garden Organics)
Collected weekly
Put in:
• All food scraps — cooked, raw, meat, bones, dairy, seafood, bread, etc.
• Garden waste — lawn clippings, branches, weeds, flowers, leaves
• Tea bags, coffee grounds, animal waste (like kitty litter and dog poo)
Important:
• Remove all packaging before placing food in this bin
• No plastic, glass, metal, paper, or cardboard — even if labelled compostable A
—
🟡 Yellow-lidded bin (Recycling)
Collected fortnightly
Put in:
• Clean, dry, and empty plastic containers (firm plastics only, lids removed)
• Glass bottles and jars (rinsed, lids off)
• Paper and cardboard (not shredded)
• Steel and aluminium cans, clean foil scrunched into a ball
Avoid:
• Soft plastics, meat trays, nappies, food scraps, and anything dirty or bagged A
—
🔴 Red-lidded bin (General Waste)
Collected fortnightly
Put in:
• Nappies, sanitary items, polystyrene, soft plastics, meat trays
• Tetra Paks, coffee cups, bioplastic cups
• Damaged crockery, clothing, shoes, toys
Avoid:
• Recyclables and organics — they belong in the yellow or green bins A
—
If you ever overflow your yellow bin, you can drop off extra recyclables at the Fremantle Recycling Centre on Montreal Street for free. And if you’re composting at home, you can still use the FOGO bin for things like bones and seafood that don’t go well in backyard compost A.
