FREO TODAY

Freo Today. 15 October 2024. We suspect many will enjoy puzzling over this pic of the port worker on the ship in front of the Port Authority building snapped yesterday by Deanna Shanahan of the famed Instagram duo @flotsamandjetsam6162. Just where was Deanna when she took it? And just what was the port worker doing?

Korcula, Croatia – the birthplace of Marco Polo?

The Dalmatian Coast has inspired sailors since ancient times, including Marco Polo. I usually write about large cruise ships: where they have travelled from and how many passengers are on board. So it’s a treat to be cruising myself. I’m on a small ship with 32 passengers and 5 crew, exploring the Dalmatian Coast — medieval towns, remote islands and pristine national parks. One of my favourite islands is Korcula. It’s impressive arriving from sea with its 12 towers and 20 metre high city walls — their presence would have warned off pirates that this town was no push over.…

Yellowstone: America’s Remote Wonderland

Even in summer, it gets damn cold in Yellowstone National Park. While it’s not uncommon for nights to drop into the low single digits, that bodes well for those prepared to rise with the sun as there is nothing quite like driving through the park early on a frigid morning. Every geyser, hot pool, fumarole, vent, and fission, screams its presence through a thick trail of rising steam. When the warm thermal steam meets the atmospheric chill it not only extenuates the rising condensation, but generates blankets of mist that settle over the low-lying waterways and meadows.
